ELF Electromagnetic Waves and Ionospheric Physics SeminarApril 30, 2025Mark Gołkowski (UCD, Denver): ELF Remote Sensing of a Gamma Ray Burst Abstract: We investigate the impact of Gamma Ray Burst 221009A on the Earth's ionosphere using extremely low frequency (ELF) and very low frequency (VLF) remote sensing techniques. Our study focuses on detecting perturbations in Schumann resonances and VLF propagation signatures. While no discernible changes were observed within the Schumann resonance band, significant disturbances were detected in the VLF band following the burst. We further apply ELF remote sensing methods by analyzing group velocity variations and changes in the amplitude of ELF signals. The observed decrease in group velocity is used to estimate an associated increase in plasma density within the lower ionosphere, offering new insights into the ionospheric response to high-energy astrophysical events.
