ELF Electromagnetic Waves and Ionospheric Physics SeminarJune 25, 2025M. Ostrowski (JU, Kraków): ELF study of positive WWLLN discharges
Abstract: It is a pre-publication report. The automatic procedure for identification of WWLLN discharges in the ELF measurements is proposed to enable mass analysis of the lightnings on the Earth. Using a single ELF sensor in Poland we were able to identify majority of lightnings detected by the WWLLN VLF network. We separately analyzed the data from Africa and from the whole globe identifying positive discharges among all recorded impulses. We also show that the lightning energy evaluations based on VLF measurements are only weakly correlated with lightning charge moments, responsible for the measured signal amplitudes in the ELF frequencies. Studying a ratio of positive discharges shows an expected significant increase of this ratio for highest amplitude impulses. However, we also revealed an unexpected low amplitude component with dominance of positive discharges, and we speculated about its possible origin, an uncontrolled systematics in the data analysis or a positive intra cloud discharge component.
