ELF Electromagnetic Waves and Ionospheric Physics SeminarJanuary 28, 2026Michael Rycroft (CAESAR Consultancy) "A lifetime exploring atmospheric and space physics" Abstract: I discuss atmospheric and space physics topics of interest to me, and I emphasise the value of conferences for the interchange of ideas between colleagues. The uniting scientific theme is solar-terrestrial physics, which includes both observational and theoretical studies of the Earth's atmosphere, the ionosphere, magnetosphere and interplanetary space. I mention some of my papers which presented interesting results, particularly those on radio physics topics. A major aspect of a career in science is the publication of papers describing the results of one's research in the refereed literature, as well as organising national and international conferences, carrying out committee work and organisational activities, and writing books and editing journals; here I discuss some highlights of my life's work. My main overall experience is that serendipity - and variety - play a large part in having an interesting career in the Earth and space sciences.
